The Opportunity

To achieve our ambitious goals, we’re looking for a Director of Research to join our Research team. This role will lead and inspire a team of qualitative and quantitative researchers whose insights drive vision and product direction. As a core part of the research leadership team, you will partner closely with cross-functional teams in Product, Design, Data Science, and Marketing to shape the future of AI-powered communication assistance.

As a Director of Research within the Core Product and Trust & Enterprise research teams, your focus will be on fostering a culture of trust, curiosity, and continuous growth while ensuring operational excellence and research rigor are at the forefront of your team’s practice. You’ll also work closely with the Head of Research to ensure that research remains a strategic and competitive advantage for Grammarly.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership: Foster a culture of collaboration, trust, and inclusivity, empowering your team to produce high-quality, actionable research.
  • Foster a Learning and Growth Culture: Create structured opportunities for feedback, skill-sharing, and peer learning within the team.
  • Drive Strategic Research Impact: Align research efforts with business goals and deeply influence product roadmaps, prioritization, and user-centered decision-making across the organization.
  • Build Cross-Functional Partnerships: Establish strong relationships with key stakeholders in Product, Design, Data Science, and Marketing. Collaborate to ensure research insights are embedded into every stage of product development.
  • Influence Organizational Mindset: Champion a research-driven approach that serves the business and its users, influencing long-term product and company strategies.

Qualifications

  • Has 8-10+ years of experience in user research in an industry setting, with a solid foundation in both qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Has 5+ years of experience managing high-performing research teams, with a proven ability to develop talent and foster an inclusive, high-performing research team.
  • Proven experience in driving strategic research impact, influencing product strategy, and fostering cross-functional partnerships.
  • Strong ability to operationalize research through effective processes and frameworks, scaling a team’s impact while maintaining rigor and efficiency.
  • Exceptional communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to translate complex research findings into actionable insights that influence senior leadership.
  • A human-centered and data-driven approach to leadership, prioritizing team well-being and growth alongside operational and business success.
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively, confidently presenting research direction and rationale to diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Embodies our EAGER values—is ethical, adaptable, gritty, empathetic, and remarkable.

Grammarly takes a market-based approach to compensation, which means base pay may vary

depending on your location. Our US locations are categorized into two compensation zones based on proximity to our hub locations. In Canada, all locations where we support employment are considered “Zone 1”.

Base pay may vary considerably depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The expected salary ranges for this position are outlined below by compensation zone and maybe modified in the future.

San Francisco:
Zone 1: $305,000 – $372,000/year (USD)
